Director of business development
Company: Good Matches
Location: In-Person | Brooklyn (Gowanus), Mon–Thu; Remote Fri
Experience Level: 5+ Years
Salary Range: $105,000 to $130,000 DOQ, plus performance bonus and benefits

About Good Matches
Good Matches is an event production & design studio specializing in corporate events, brand activations, high-end private celebrations, and nonprofit fundraisers. We create experiences that feel thoughtful, elevated, and culturally relevant—and we care deeply about how people connect.
Our values guide everything we do:
Excellence: Details matter. Taste matters. Execution matters.
Experimentation: We're curious, brave, and willing to try new ideas.
Connection: Events are about people—clients, guests, partners, and our team.
We're a studio that makes things - and makes things happen. Our space is in the Old American Can Factory, an artist building in Gowanus, and we treat it like a laboratory for how people can gather. This is a small team. Your work will shape the company’s growth, culture, and brand voice directly.
The Role
The Director of Business Development is a new position at Good Matches—and a consequential one. We've built our reputation on referrals and are now investing in intentional outbound growth for the first time. This role is for the leader who takes us there.
This role is 60% business development, 20% account leadership, and 20% brand development. You'll be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and closing deals with new clients across our core verticals—brands, corporations, nonprofits, and luxury private events — while also helping shape how Good Matches presents itself in the market. You know the experiential and event world from the inside. You've sat in the room. You have the relationships. You close deals.
Your job is to open doors, build trust, and bring in the work. You will hand off to our production team once a client is signed, staying close through the early relationship but not running day-to-day execution. Event production is out of scope for this role.
Responsibilities
Business Development (60%)
Own the full sales cycle: prospecting, outreach, pitching, proposal development, and close
Develop and maintain a qualified pipeline of brand-side CMOs and marketing directors, corporate event buyers, and nonprofit development directors
Represent Good Matches at industry events, conferences, and in professional networks
Build and execute a structured outbound strategy alongside the CEO/Founder, using tools like Apollo.io and LinkedIn
Respond to inbound leads and RFPs with high-quality, on-brand proposals
Meet an annual Gross Profit target of $1M–$2M
Account Leadership (20%)
Serve as the primary client relationship owner from first conversation through contract signing
Manage the transition from sale to production—ensuring handoff to the production team is thorough and relationship continuity is maintained
Nurture existing client relationships for repeat business and referrals
Brand Development (20%)
Collaborate with the CEO/Founder on Good Matches' positioning, messaging, and market presence
Contribute to LinkedIn thought leadership, social content strategy, and earned media opportunities
Support website updates, case study development, and other marketing materials that reflect our voice and aesthetic
Qualifications
5+ years of business development or sales experience at an experiential marketing or event production agency
Proven track record of cultivating and closing five- and six-figure event and activation contracts
Established relationships with brand-side marketers, corporate event decision-makers, and/or nonprofit leadership in New York
Deep fluency in the experiential marketing landscape—venues, vendors, formats, clients, and trends
Excellent written and verbal communication; you write proposals people want to read
Comfortable operating with autonomy in a small studio environment
NYC-based and available for in-person work Mon–Thu in Gowanus, Brooklyn
Bachelor's degree preferred
You're a Great Fit If You…
Have a book of business you're proud of and relationships you've earned over time
Understand that great events start with great clients—and know how to find & keep them
Can speak fluently about aesthetics, culture, and what makes an event memorable
Are energized by a small team where your voice, instincts, influence and judgment matter
Want to help shape the growth of a studio that's building something genuinely distinctive
You are seeking for a team with the power to build and ready to own something
Why Good Matches
Direct access to the CEO/Founder and leadership from day one
High-profile, creatively ambitious work across brand, corporate, and nonprofit verticals
A studio culture that values taste, experimentation, and real human connection
Competitive base salary with performance bonus structure
Room to define what this role becomes as the company grow
Compensation
Salary Range: $105,000–$130,000 DOQ, plus annual performance bonus tied to revenue targets.
This is not a commission role. We believe in stable compensation with meaningful upside for exceptional performance. The bonus structure is tiered against annual new Gross Profit closed:
$1M closed → 10% of base bonus
$1.5M closed → 12.5% of base bonus
$2M closed → 15% of base bonus
Specific bonus terms are finalized during the offer process.
